In 1981, Comfortaire ® launched its first air supported mattress ... 7 (seven) years before there was a Select Comfort ® or a Sleep Number Bed ®. For the past 30 years Comfortaire has quietly innovated, created and refined our mattress designs and technology and has been recognized by the industry for our accomplishments. Our products are designed to give you individual control of your individual sleep needs and the materials we use give you the confidence that your Comfortaire mattress will be around for many years to come.
Our 1981 air mattress design remains the basic design used in the marketplace today. Our Original Technology™ design was two deep filled latex-cotton air chambers, surrounded by foam sidewalls, topped with foam comfort layer/s, enclosed in a zippered cover and controlled by an air control system to allow you to change the firmness of your mattress. Our 30 year air mattress design and construction is still seen in the industry today. But Comfortaire did not stop there. We innovated a number of significant design improvements over the years and emerged with our Modern Air Bed Technology™ designs to enhance your sleep experience. As a result, we provide you with benefits that our competitors are not able to match.
Our Box-Top Air™ design revolutionized benefits you receive from sleeping on air. The improvements were so unique; we were granted a patent on the technology. The competition fills its box-top mattresses with foam which buries the air chamber in the bottom of the mattresses; we brought the air to the surface to give you the benefits that you want from air…individual adjustability to meet your sleep needs. After all, don't you buy an air mattress for the air and its ability to adjust to your changing sleep needs? When the chamber is buried under inches of foam, its ability to provide posturization and comfort is compromised. It is essentially nothing more than a means to provide support to the mattress. With all of the foam between you and the chamber, your body may hammock uncomfortably before you get the support you thought you were getting when you bought your mattress.
Another of the improvements Comfortaire innovated and patented is the Edge-to-Edge Air™ design. Our Box-Top Air™ design with its low profile air chambers at the surface of the mattress gives you edge-to-edge posturization and adjustability. This means that your mattress adjusts to your sleep needs all the way to the edge of the bed. With our original air bed design, and that of the competitor, the deep filled air chambers rest inside of 3" to 4" foam sidewalls. This means that on a queen size bed you lose 12% of the adjustable sleeping surface of your mattress. After all, aren't you buying an air bed for the air and its ability to adjust to your changing sleep needs?
If you have a sleep partner, their sleep needs may be very different from your own. Your sleep needs may require a very firm mattress and your sleep partner's may require a very soft mattress. The industry standard deep fill latex-cotton air chambers are 6 to 7 inches deep. When sleeping on old technology chambers you may experience an uncomfortable sensation of rolling to the center of the mattress. When a very soft chamber and a very firm chamber touch in the middle of your mattress, you will definitely feel the difference in the chambers. There is not a good way to disguise this issue. The competition uses a strip of foam that goes down the center of the bed. Comfortaire found a better solution.
Comfortaire's patented Box-Top Air™ design uses proprietary 3½ urethane alloy air chambers. This special design is the perfect height to fully posturize your body to meet your individual sleep needs. Because Comfortaire's uniquely designed chambers are lower profile than those in the competitors beds, this issue is minimized on your Comfortaire mattress. This is yet another example of why a Comfortaire mattress is designed with you in mind. Comfortaire understands that your sleep partner's needs may be different than yours…but we don't believe that difference should affect the way you sleep.
The first chamber Comfortaire introduced to the marketplace 30 years ago was latex-cotton. Today the Sleep Number Bed®, continues to use latex-cotton air chambers. However, the past 30 years have brought significant advancements in materials and fabrication. So why continue to use 30 year old technology? Comfortaire innovated and created a new air chamber design. This low profile design using state of the art materials removes the problems inherent with industry standard latex-cotton chambers. Comfortaire Urethane Chambers are:
